Record: 3-0-1 from four starts
Earnings: $88,500
Trainer: Barbara Heads
Owners: M/M R.J. Bennett
Winner: $100,000 Emerald Breeder's Cup Distaff, King County Handicap, Washington State Legislators Stakes.
The 5-year-old mare powered her way into contention during the stretch turn and raced home on the lead the rest of the way to capture the $84,375 Emerald Breeder's Cup Distaff by 1 3/4 lengths. She has won three stakes races in just four starts here. "I had a ton of horse at the quarter pole," said jockey Ricky Frazier. Always a Dixie didn't get into the lead in her previous two stakes races until inside the 1/8 pole. But yesterday she was keen to get into the race right from the start. "She broke running, speed has been holding," said Frazier. "She likes the racetrack" said trainer Barbara Heads. She has had six career wins. The BC bred is owned by Mr. & Mrs. R.J. Bennett, who captured the 1984 Longacres Mile with Travelling Victor.

By Doug Abraham
"I just hope every little person in horse racing has an opportunity to experience the same excitement that Native Brass gave us last year," said co-owner Bob Griffin of St. Albert. "You don't have to pay a lot of money sometimes." "Last year was a thrill with Native Brass, absolutely. Trainer Bruce Phelan and jockey Alex Ferris both did excellent jobs. To me it's a team effort. About this time last year I was looking around to buy a derby contender. We knew we had something with Native Brass, but we didn't know how good it was. It just goes to show you..."
"Native Brass was a dream," Phelan lauds.
Ferris, off to another good start this spring with eight wins, added:
"Just and outstanding filly. She was really good for Alberta racing. She'd break kinda flat, but then she'd kick into gear after a mile and after that, the farther they raced, the better she got. Everybody involved with Native Brass, from the owners and trainer down to myself, we all worked hard and long with with this filly. Her rewards were deserved and well earned." Native Brass, also acclaimed best Alberta-bred and three-year old fillychampion at last Saturday's annual awards dinner, recently went back into training in New York because, as Bob Griffin explained,
"She needs longer races and a bigger track (than Alberta has). Joyride
The Ascot Graduation Stakes
October 19, 2003
R.J. and Lois Bennett's homebred Joyride picked a good time to win his first race - the Oct. 19 Ascot Graduation Stakes at Hastings Race-course. Although it came in his sixth start, Joyride showed plenty of promise beforehand. He had placed in stakes the first three times he raced.

Native Pictograph of a horse by Flying Horse Farm dating from 1750 AD. The First Nations people used to herd their horses down to the lake to winter. At this rock bluff natives used to swim their horses behind a canoe across the lake and offer small animals to appease the Lake Serpent, Ogopogo. (One time John McDougall forgot!) In the summer they camped up on the cooler mountain lakes. In the winter they camped on the lakeshore of Okanagan Lake.
